General Awareness:
	Precipitation: 3.0 mm of rain was measured this week.  24.1 mm of rain were measured for July-so-far.  No snow or hail.  We are 6.9 mm below average (78% of average) for July.   The water-year-to-date is a deficit from the average of 386.5 mm or 73% of average.  
	Weather Observations: The last part of the week saw both smoke & fog, some wind, but generally warm & calm.
	Drought Monitoring Assessments: The most recent (July 17) drought assessment from the province has us & all of Vancouver Island D2 while the Central Coast has improved to D0 (Normal).  The Keogh & Zaballos Rivers are reported to have “suboptimal” stream flow with potential for “significant or irreversible harm” to the ecosystem.   Zeballos River is flowing 34% of its average volume. The Tsitika & San Josef Rivers are now rated as “normal” for flow volume.  Klaskish, & Nimpkish Rivers are below normal (13 & 42%, respectively).  The most recent AgCan drought map (June 30, 2025) shows the D0 area covering Northern Vancouver Island and the Central Coast.  
Business & Industry:
	The DFO page for Tidal Area 12 is not online at the moment. 
Energy:
	Need for heating/cooling of homes: We have neither been heating nor cooling the home.  The weather has been nice enough that we could use the clothes line.
Fire:
	Fire Danger: Moderate as per today’s BC Wildfire Service evaluation.
	Prescribed Burns: There are no OFTS burns registered in our region.
	Burn Bans: Coastal Fire Centre has added Category 1 fires to the burn ban (previously only Category 2 & 3) for Vancouver Island & much of the coastal mainland as of July 17th.   No more campfires.
	Wildfire: According to BC Wildfire Service, there are no wildfires burning in our area.  Never-the-less we are seeing smokey skies from time to time as smoke drifts over from fires in the interior. 
Plants & Wildlife: Salmon berries are starting to become edible and strawberries are still producing but they are slowing down. Thimbleberries & blueberries are starting up.  The raspberries are producing a lot.  The apples on the tree in the neighborhood are getting big. Poppies, California lilac, and  garden roses are all blooming still along with lilies.  Eagles, corvids, and songbirds are active in the neighborhood.  Husband saw salmon (pinks?) jumping in the bay this afternoon.
Society & Public Health: BCCDC Report for July 17th says that no active measles cases have been reported in Vancouver Island Health Authority.  1 case was active in the province, according to the report.  
Tourism & Recreation: Today the village was visited by two ships from the SALTS program (Pacific Grace & Pacific Swift).  Kayakers and other boaters have been active.
Water Supply & Quality: 
Raw data from Obswell 201 indicate that our water table has been below or at the 10-year low since about January 5th.  Now the well is showing a depth of 6.85 m to the water table, which is nearly the same as lowest datum for this date set in 2009.
