A dry week, giving May a monthly total of 0.82", 35.7% of normal. ETo total for the month 1.86". Continued mix of marine layer days and sunny days, with highs in the low 50s to 70, and lows mid 40s to low 50s. Ruth Lake at 100% on May 29. Mad River 6 ft. and 100 cfs/Eel River at Scotia 9.75 ft. and 863 cfs. Trinity River in low/mid 50s and the ocean offshore in the low 50s. California drought map gives "no drought" north of San Francisco and Sacramento, but all levels of drought as you go south to the Mexican border. All 3 common hummingbirds here--Anna's, Allen's and Rufous--showing up at the feeder. Mourning Dove appeared, which has happened in the past, but not commonly seen at my location. Fields still green but noticed irrigation equipment out in some areas. Mckinleyville has its "Pony Express Days" festivities on June 7, though Mckinleyville had nothing to do with that short-lived mail service. And shucks, almost forgot Arcata's huge Oyster Festival coming up on June 14. Oysters, raw or cooked, and the Oyster Calling Contest, too. Thousands will be showing up for that on the Arcata Plaza that day.  View

Over the past week, we experienced very calm conditions with no measurable rainfall. The skies were mostly clear to partly sunny, though coastal stratus clouds did occasionally dominate the view, softening the sunlight. Looking ahead, we're expecting slightly gusty winds from the north on Sunday and into Sunday night, with gusts reaching around 30–32 mph. Although these winds fall below advisory criteria, they might create a fun kite-flying opportunity! Since May 1, we've recorded just 0.65 inches of rain—about 33% below our usual average. With no significant precipitation expected in the next week and as we fully transition into summer, dry conditions are likely to continue. If any rainfall does occur, it might only be isolated, light showers early in the fall during a weak monsoonal phase, which won't offset the current deficit. See you all next week, and thank you for reading.  View

Some precip, but conditions continue to be on the dry side for this time of year. Thunderstorms are reappearing in the forcast and have begun to appear. Temps are seasonal for early summer and AC use is growing toward summer peaks, but not there yet. Plants are showing some signs of recovery, but need continued moisture to fully recover. FIRE - At present, and after 1.66in of precipitation reported today, the fire hazard has been reduced, and we are reporting NORMAL. We will see how long this condition will last. ENERGY - Last week’s temperatures were just around normal each day and night. So with our normals at 90 and 71, we’re not up or down in our Energy use age. Also, next week is forecasted to cloudy and rain changes each day and night. Clouds reduce the need for the AC to run as much. GENERAL - Needed rain is predicted for the next Ten days in our forecast. This will be welcomed by most Floridians except those renting on the Coast.  View

With only 0.15" of precip over the week soil conditions have returned to mildly dry. Area waterways have slowly dropped to below their normal levels. And the U.S. Drought Monitor still has our area in a moderate drought. Thought that the previous weeks heavy rains would have relieved that condition somewhat but the drought remains. Trees and shrubs are doing well enough but they are not quite as lush as to be expected. Area lawns are growing slower and my garden is now dusty dry on the surface with deeper soil still moist. Wildlife has been about the same with numerous birds at the feeder and what looks to be flycatchers or pee wees nesting above my front door. I did briefly try to discourage them but their persistence was so impressive that I relented. Maybe they will catch a few flying bugs that would otherwise get inside the house.  View

May 24-30, 2025 Brignac, Louisiana Adequate rainfall this week prompted changes to flower beds to prepare for the arrival of summer annuals. The soil cultivated well without being sticky. Irrigating flower pot is a daily activity although automatic watering makes life easier. A late season cold front came through on Friday but was pretty much dry for this area. Road construction was limited to work that didn’t involve moving dirt. Lots of birds are in the yard and at the feeding table including cardinals, blue jays, house sparrows, titmice, chickadees, brown headed cow birds, and of course squirrels.  View

The weather is hot and the soil is dry. Field plants are growing very slowly this year, but roses, cacti and gardens are doing very well. Our May total precipitation was 1.07 which was more than twice the normal amount of 0.49. The water year total so far is 3.52 which is below the normal of 5.17. Most trees are healthy but some species are stressed and have yellow autumn leaves already, possibly due to the dryness before May. The June normal precipitation is 0.56 and the forecast is for almost this amount to fall next week. Our water supply is adequate. No fire weather concerns through the next three days as a substantial increase in moisture and thunderstorms is expected.  View

A Wet weather pattern continued this week with 4.42" inches of rain in the past seven days. Overall, the soil moisture remains wetter than normal for this time of year, and our grass in our lawn has been growing very fast as a result of the increased moisture. Next, our flower garden appears to be blooming its last blooms for the year, and our Pears continue to get larger on our Kieffer Pear Tree. Lastly, area wildlife remains active with multiple sightings of birds, and various insect species including: wasps, and mosquitoes.  View
